project restyle [part one]

I think mentioned before that Mike is moving into a bigger place in July, well I've been on the hunt for fun and inexpensive ways to outfit the place and remembered a lamp my parents didn't want anymore. So I grabbed one of my favorite art medias, spray paint, and got to work!!!

This was a really simple fix up for a dated looking lamp base. I plan on doing something with the shade soon but haven't quite figured out what. Not to mention we aren't sure what the color scheme will be for the living room just yet so I didn't want to get too carried away. I might check thrift stores for a barrel shade instead of this cone-like one. I think a barrel lamp shade would make it look quite modern with a fun pattern painted on, no? So hopefully I can come up with what we want for the shade and I'll be sure to update. But for now, here are the super simple steps I took to revamp this lamp [I'm a poet]...

First, I wrapped what I didn't want to get painted in masking tape. In hindsight, I wish I would have put an old sock over the bulb part and then taped the sock because peeling off that masking tape afterward was not so fun.

Then, I just took my silver spray paint and did a few even coats around the whole lamp, making sure to get all the nooks and crannies. Don't soak it too much or the paint will run and leave drip marks.

Finally, after the silver had dried I took some Satin Finish to it to give it a more matte look rather than the shiny metallic look the silver had at first. This restyle took all of 5 minutes to do so if you have any outdated lamps laying around [or really anything for that matter] it's amazing what a new paint job can do.

Check back soon for part two of this lamp revamp :]

  1. I love this! And also, my idea for a shade (barrel or otherwise) is keep the shade white, but take a strip or something like a strip of fabric (or tape, or whatever) and make black lines on the shade. Crisscrossing them, etc. Not like a plaid effect, but more "artsy."

This may not be a good idea, I don't know. I claim to be craftsy, but I've only just STARTED actually being craftsy. :P

  2. I was actually going to do exactly that lol. But maybe use yellow ribbon :)

Thanks for stopping by! I'd love to know what you think!
